1. APPLICATION
The basis of the inquiry is to provide a general evaluation of this ranch for the vineyard potential.
2. AREA DESCRIPTION
The area presented in this report is approximately 160 acres, with
approximately 50 acres represented in detail. The property is currently used for grazing cattle.
3. LOCATION
The property is located in the Sonoma County north of Windsor.
4. LOCATION OF OTHER VINEYARDS
The property is located in an area with many other vineyards and adjacent to one on the northeast corner and one on the south side.
5. SOIL CONSIDERATIONS
Soil profiles and soil chemical analyses were completed on 11 sites. The soils report does contain information about limiting factors for vineyard development, While all of these factors will need to be considered and will increase the costs of vineyard development, none will prohibit vineyard development or adversely effect the quality grapes produced from this potential site. The slopes are moderate which will accommodate increased vine densities and make drainage improvements practical. Soil preparations will need to be intense and more expensive, but not excessive for this area. One site (#6) which had high salt levels should probably be avoided when considering vineyard.
6. WATER SUPPLY CONSIDERATIONS
Water supplies for this property have not been developed and will need to be determined before my vineyard should be considered.
7. FROST CONTROL SYSTEMS
Frost control systems should be considered for all vineyards in Sonoma
County. This location does not seem to be particularly frost prone area in the upper portions, however the lower areas will most likely require frost protection. The exact types of frost protection will need to be determined some later time.
8. GENERAL OBSERVATIONS
This property has many factors, which will enhance its capabilities for vineyard development. The location is an established vineyard area within one or more viticultura1 appellations. The site is has generally south and westerly slopes and very good air drainage; which are quality enhancements. The location should be warm enough to grow almost any variety normally grow in Sonoma County.
